Aim

To deliver consumer-centred, recovery-oriented mental health services, mental health nurses must support consumer rights, autonomy, and self-determination; and engage in partnerships and collaborative decision-making, focusing on the strengths of consumers and carers (Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Health Council, 2017).

A growing body of evidence highlights the benefits of consumer-centred approaches in mental health settings, including improved levels of health and well-being (Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council, 2013). At the same time, various issues have been encountered when implementing recovery-oriented services in practice, including challenges faced by mental health nurses when working collaboratively to maintain confidentiality and privacy and to understand when it is appropriate to share information (Mental Health Coordinating Council, 2019).
