Project Management Theory and Practice - Level 7 Msc of construction project management
Learning Outcome 1: Critically deploy strategies in planning, designing, managing and executing construction projects.
Assessment Description
In relation to the redevelopment project (see background information) consider the following questions.
Question 1
By carefully considering the objectives for this project, critically discuss the likely details of the business case highlighting the key issues (you may ignore any financial considerations).
Question 2
Collaboration is probably the most important factor of a successful project, as well as to mitigate potential risks. Critically discuss how early collaboration might help to consider and reduce the risks in this project?
Question 3
The building was constructed with a complex steel frame and the use of concrete slabs to provide flooring, stair, and lift towers. Steel and concrete teams were often working at the same time with one following on right behind the other in order to deliver the building on time. A critical element to the project timeline was the initial substructure which had 20 weeks allocated to it. This section included the foundations, construction of the leisure centre`s pool and the associated pipe work.
Activities for the substructure are shown in the table. Times are shown in weeks, where O= Optimistic time, P= Pessimistic time, ML= Most Likely time.

Working to one decimal place:
a. Calculated the likelihood that this part of the project can be completed on time.
b. Find out the time that the project manager might be 95% confident of completing by
c. What would be the time that the PM would be 30% confident of finishing by?
d. Explain the statistical principles that underpin the calculations in the first 3 parts.
Question 4
Using the final network analysis derived in question 3 :-
a. Construct a Gantt chart using Microsoft Project.
b. On the chart indicate the free and total float and demonstrate the new total duration
c. On a separate chart the progress bars as of 14 weeks if everything was on schedule (you may approximate to the nearest 25%).
Question 5
Due to the scale of this project and the potentially large numbers of stakeholders involved, identify stakeholders that are likely to have an impact on the project. Using suitable stakeholder management techniques, appraise the considerations of these stakeholders and derive a suitable stakeholder management strategy.
