Unit Title : Discourse Analysis

You will submit a discourse analysis of a newspaper article which will be provided for you, to analyse how an issue relating to race has been reported. You will conduct a discourse analysis on this article using the linguistic tools and strategies associated with this method to demonstrate how news racism has been reproduced.

The discourse analysis needs to include the following information :
o description of discourse analysis
o explanation of how you have applied the method to conduct the analysis of the article
o description of the main findings about how news racism has been reproduced through the linguistic tools and strategies applied in the article
o advantages and limitations of the method
o how you might use the findings to challenge racism in the news.

The discourse analysis needs to show knowledge and understanding of how crime is reported in the media and how news racism operates based on some reading around the topic. It also needs to show knowledge and understanding of the method of discourse analysis to explain how it is has been applied to the article, based on reading about the method. There will be further guidance on Blackboard and a chance to practice conducting a discourse analysis in class. There will be an online drop-in session in Week 12 to provide any last-minute help before you submit it.
