Assignment 3: Critical Appraisal Task:

This assignment (Assignment 3 of the module) asks you to engage in a critical appraisal of ONE research study and to explore the principles of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). There are two parts to the assignment:

  • Asks you to offer a detailed Critical Appraisal of ONE study using the headings outlined below in an Academic Essay (c. 1500 words)
  • Include a copy of the completed worksheet ‘Critical Appraisal Worksheet’ (not included in the word count.

You should upload the two sections in ONE document to SULIS as well as the cover sheet provided in this document.

  1. Introduction

Introduce the essay by clearly stating which article you have critically appraised. What is the purpose of this essay? Say what you’re going to say.

  1. Principles of evidence-based practice

Briefly describe the principles of evidence-based practice. Include references to literature that explains EBP. Indicate how these principles and the findings of the article, can contribute to practice and policy in the substance use field.

  1. Strengths and Weaknesses

What are the key strengths and weaknesses of the research study?

Focus on 2 strengths and 1 weakness for example. (You could reference another study that did this differently or you could reference a research methods book that highlights strengths or weaknesses of an approach, for instance).

  1. Conclusion

Tie it all together – present the overall appraisal.

The reader should get a sense of the entire essay by only reading the conclusion.

  1. References

Use Cite it Right. Include the article itself, as well as any other references used in the article.
