Purpose
This assessment will require the application of various psychological theories to analyse a case study of a child displaying problematic behaviours due to issues experienced within the home environment or family microsystem. The case study under focus has been attached as Appendix A at the end of this assignment guide.
In this assessment you will be required to explain the child`s holistic development and provide supportive strategies through drawing on various psychological theories. You are thus not permitted to use any AI tools to generate your final overall responses, as we want to assess your understanding of theory and your ability to apply principles from the theory to create an empathetic and supportive classroom environment. You may use these AI tools in the planning phases of your assessment, but all responses must be reframed in your own words and supported by information from your prescribed and recommended readings and very specific detail from the case study.
In this assessment specific humanised reflection and application to the issues as outlined in the case study must be explored through a psychological lens. AI tools generally produce very generalised analysis, consequently, for this assessment we want you to apply your psychological knowledge to guide best practice as this is needed in the realworld setting.
The case study that will guide your analysis is fictitious, but these are issues that you will likely encounter in your classroom context. Psychological theories will help in understanding the underlying cause of behaviour to allow you to empathise with the person rather than judging the child`s or parents` behaviours as maladaptive. Furthermore, psychological teachings and schools of thought can be used to design adaptative and supportive strategies to help address and overcome problematic behaviour in a supportive manner.
Description
All students must download an assessment template. The Assessment 2 template will provide various short-answer application-based questions and assign a mark per question. This template will be made available In your preparation, it is important to develop a general overview or understanding of what is underpinning and impacting the child`s overall development. All students must aim to analyse the case study holistically and then review the specific requirements within the 2 sample questions accessible on the LMS. Work through the sample questions in your preparation for the assessment.
Question
1. For Question 1, you must respond to various theoretical and application-based questions and sub-questions focusing on the contemporary psychological theories explored in Unit 1. To prepare for this, you must aim to understand the core arguments or principles from the various contemporary theories which aim to account for specific behavioural patterns, and for you to reflect on strategies you would implement based on the arguments of a particular theory.
After you have a good foundational understanding of the arguments and principles you must interrogate the strengths and shortcomings of each theory in applying this within the South-African context. Self-reflection and application of theories and perspectives will be required.
2. For Question 2, you must respond to various theoretical and application-based questions and sub-questions focusing on theories and perspectives from Lesson or Unit 4 "The Nature-Nurture Debate". To prepare for this, you must aim to understand the core arguments or principles of the various arguments within this debate as interrogated in your contact lectures, lecture notes, or your distance learning study guide.
After you have a good foundational understanding of the arguments and principles you must interrogate the strengths and shortcomings of each theory concerning the contemporary agreement or understanding of the Nature-Nurture debate. Self-reflection and application of theories and perspectives will be required.
3. For Question 3, you must critically evaluate the holistic development of your chosen case study by applying Erikson`s Ego psychosocial Theory. You will be required to have a critical awareness of theory which you must apply to various case study-based questions.
For this part of the assessment, you must address the requirements of various subquestions. The instructions and mark allocation will determine the level of detail required to successfully meet the various requirements. To prepare for the questions, identify milestones and challenges you believe positively or negatively impacted the individual`s development within their chronosystem.
4. For Question 4 you will be expected to critically evaluate the individual`s holistic development from the identified case-study, through critically applying Maslow`s Hierarchy of Needs Theory. You will be required to have a critical understanding of Maslow`s theory to address the requirements of questions. For this part of the assessment, you must address the requirements of various subquestions. The instructions and mark allocation will determine the level of detail required to successfully meet the various requirements per sub-question. To prepare for the questions it is important to understand the strengths and limitations of Maslow`s Hierarchy of Needs Theory. You will then be expected to assess how arguments of the theory may or may not apply to understanding the individual`s successful development despite the external challenges.
