In various medical disciplines, objective diagnoses can often be made with certainty: a clavicle is broken, infection is present, or TSH levels meet the diagnostic criteria for hypothyroidism. However, psychiatry deals with psychological phenomena and behaviors, which raises the question of whether these can be objectively defined by scientific criteria or if they are social constructions (Gergen, 1985; Boland, Verduin, & Ruiz, 2022).

Thanks to advancements in recent decades, it is now understood that psychopathology arises from a complex interplay of multiple factors. Theoretical and clinical insights from fields such as neural sciences, genetics, psychology, and social-cultural sciences contribute to this understanding. These factors influence the expression, classification, diagnosis, and prevalence of psychopathology. Therefore, it is crucial for a nurse practitioner to adopt a multidimensional, integrative approach when addressing psychopathology.

Reviewing this week’s Learning Resources provides insight into the myriad factors contributing to the development of psychopathology. Considerations of the theoretical perspective on psychopathology significantly impact the work of the PMHNP.

Explanation of the factors influencing the development of psychopathology:

  1. Biological factors encompass genetic predispositions and neuroscientific processes. Genetic variations and alterations in neural circuitry can contribute to vulnerability or resilience to psychopathology.
  2. Psychological factors involve behavioral and cognitive processes, emotional regulation, and developmental experiences. Maladaptive cognitive patterns, emotional dysregulation, and adverse childhood experiences can increase the risk of psychopathology.
  3. Social, cultural, and interpersonal factors play a significant role in shaping psychopathology. Social support, cultural norms, and interpersonal relationships influence individuals` perceptions, coping mechanisms, and access to resources, thereby impacting their mental health outcomes.
