Literature reviews are an essential part of the research process. Getting to know the literature will help you to define your question and understand the importance of your research. Research does not take place in a vacuum. Where does your research fit in with previously conducted research, policy, and practice? What is known about the topic? What research needs to be completed? How is your study important in relation to this literature?
Where do you start looking for helpful articles? If you don’t know a lot about your topic, looking at introductory texts can be helpful. For example, if you want to study a topic related to education, simply looking at college texts on the sociology of education will give you a good idea of questions you might ask.
Limit your library search to peer-reviewed academic journals. Sociologists turn to academic journals such as American Sociological Review, Annual Review of Sociology, Sociological Methods and Research, Gender and Society, Sociology of Education, American Journal of Sociology, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, etc. Highly respected journals in Anthropology include American Anthropologist, Annual Review of Anthropology, Current Anthropology, Journal of Anthropological Sciences, and more.
