Foner highlights various cultural and intellectual elements that led the American colonists to develop a sense of resentment towards British leadership: The "Rights of Englishmen" that they felt entitled to (Ch. 3), the Enlightenment (Ch. 4), and the arguments of men like Thomas Paine in Common Sense which encouraged the colonists to seek independence, to name a few.
