The paper should focus on the sociological issue you wrote
about in your proposal. You should describe the issue and how your theorist speaks to your issue.

Elaborate more on my proposal: Emile Durkeim on Suicide
When a suicide-related death occurs, community members are in disbelief, relatives and friends are in a state of shock and they do not understand why someone they love would take their own life. The behaviors of a person experiencing a mental health crisis can be unpredictable and often go unnoticed. On Sunday, January 19, 2023, San Gabriel and surrounding areas were shocked by the suicide of a 19-year-old local who hung himself on a pedestrian bridge over the I-10 freeway in San Gabriel.
A social phenomenon present in society and affecting every culture is Suicide. According to The National Institute of Mental Health, “Suicide is defined as death caused by self-directed injurious behavior with the intent to die as a result of the behavior.” According to Garraza et al.(2015), The second leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15 to 24 is suicide. The problem addressed in this proposal is the alarming increase in suicide cases among teenagers and young adults. Teenagers and young adults experience problems at home, peer pressure, relationship problems and increased stress from academics.
Emile Durkheim correlated suicide to sociological factors. During his study, he concluded that suicide can result from social causes and are not just the result of psychological aspects of human behavior. Durkheim’s study concluded that the more socially integrated and connected a person is to their community, the less likely they are to commit suicide. The more social integration and interaction decrease, the more people commit suicide. Those that felt they didn’t know their place in society were at an increased risk of suicide.
Durkheim argued that social structures influenced thoughts of suicide. During the industrial revolution, thousands of jobs were created, and people began spending more time at work. Durkheim believed to help stop suicide, social organizations such as the workplace needed to be strengthened. During this time, workers were unhappy because they did all the physical labor for little pay while owners profited. People were working hard for little pay and could not afford the cost of living. Durkheim noticed that people were never generally satisfied with what they had and always wanted more.
To better understand how suicide is intertwined with social factors, Durkheim developed a framework to understand how social factors influence suicide. Anomic suicide is the response by a person who is experiencing chaos from a shifting society. They feel disconnected from society and feel they do not belong. Altruistic suicide is often a result of excessive regulation of individuals by social forces meaning the individual may feel the need to kill themselves for the benefit of their community or society. Egoistic suicide is committed by people who feel detached from society. This can be the result of losing loved ones. Fatalistic suicide occurs when people feel they are living in oppressive conditions and believe they would rather die than continue experiencing the oppressive condition.
