Case Study

Human Anatomy and Physiology

Purpose of this assignment:

The physiological principles in health and social care is to provide a holistic overview of the structure and functioning of the human body as appropriate for those working in health and social care. The purpose of physiological principles in health and social care is on how the body functions as a whole rather than on detailed anatomy and physiology from a biological perspective. The emphasis is on exploring those aspects of body function which impact on care delivered in health and social care settings.

Scenario:

St. Vincents Care Home is a modern, purpose-built care home that is located in a quiet residential area. It provides specialist residential and nursing care for older people. It has 114 beds and caters for a variety of elderly clients with different care requirements. These care requirements include dementia care, end of life, nursing care, palliative care and residential care. You are working at St. Vincents Care Home and as a part of your professional development you have to demonstrate your understanding of the human body.

Task1

1.1 Therefore, you are required to outline the main anatomical features of the human body.
1.2 Discuss with a group of colleagues how the body systems interact in order to carry out particular functions and grow. At the end of the discussion prepare your individual report

Scenario

You have been invited to attend a workshop, organised by the NHS. In this workshop, the trainers have demonstrated relationships between body functions in accordance with the anatomy and physiology of each organ. They have shown you some human specimens and they also played many educational videos demonstrating the function of different systems of the body. You are asked to write an essay (approximately 1000-1200 words).

Task2

LO2 Understand the relationship between body functioning and relevant detailed anatomy and physiology

2.1 Explain the ways in which the body responds to different activities like breathing, eating, excreting, physical activity.
2.2 Discuss how these activity responses are explained by cellular and tissue structure .
2.3 How the body coordinates to monitor its internal activities to maintain normal body function.

Scenario:

James (70 years old) was admitted last week at Hounslow Nursing Care Home, with early signs of dementia and complaining of recurrent episodes of difficulty in breathing. John was examined by the Consultant Physician who advised on some medications. He was complaining about rapid heart beating and tremors in the fingers. John is also suffering from diabetes. The doctor informed John that there could be rapid heartbeat and shivering of hands due to side effects of the medicine.

The Manager asks you to monitor James continuously and examine his medical records and get information by asking his medical history, present complaints, any past history of similar episodes of shortness of breath, if any member of the family, grandparents/forefathers have such disease, allergy to dust, food item or medicine, temperature, how the symptoms worsen and were relieved. After perusing the medical records and gathering information of medical illness, record them in Jamess personal file.

Task3

3.1 Explain what is the significance of these recordings and use of routine measures in health and social care using the case study.
3.2 Give your assessment on how routine measures provide information about function in relation to case study.
3.3 You are also required to examine how information about the body function may help care planning for Jamess illness.

Task 4

4.1 Write a report to explain how age may affect body structure and function including physical, psychological and social effects.
4.2 Assess the impact of common disorders on body structure and function.
4.3 explain the relationship between effects of common disorders and infections to the routine health care given to the individuals who are affected by them.
