Assignment Task

Executive Summary

The present report provides a proposal for a business case. The proposed business case is a Community-based recycling program. As per the program, waste material of certain types will be collected and transported to a waste recycling facility. The selected waste material for recycling includes paper, cardboard, glass and plastic. The recycled material will be sold in the local market through the recycling plant operator, from which a portion of the earnings will be retained by the project sponsor. The project will serve 10,000 households in the local community for a period of 12 months. A volunteer from each locality will be appointed to provide knowledge, guidance and motivation to the locality members.

The report provides a quantitative analysis of project feasibility using the weighted scoring model. Moreover, the report discusses the objectives, constraints, stakeholders and assumptions of the project. In addition, the report provides a SWOT analysis of the proposed project. Furthermore, the report provides a cost estimate for the project. The report further discusses the risks associated with the project and provides mitigation measures. Finally, the report provides a list of project milestones along with the timescale.

Objectives

  • To reduce the amount of waste being sent to the community landfill: Landfills are efficiently run establishments that offer a location for the disposal of solid waste. These facilities are designed, controlled, and operated to protect the surrounding environment and groundwater from contamination of waste. Moreover, the landfills monitor landfill gas and groundwater contamination in order to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (Nanda and Berruti 2021). Recyclable materials eventually end up in landfills when they are thrown in trashcans rather than recycled. These objects occupy space that could be used to store non-recyclable materials instead. Recycling reduces the amount of waste being sent to the landfill, which can be used for disposing of non-recyclable waste. In addition, plastic, which produces greenhouse gases and gives out chemicals into the soil and groundwater as it decomposes in a landfill, can be kept out of landfills to mitigate these impacts (Nanda and Berruti 2021). Thus, recycling can reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfill site, which reduces and increases the utility of the site and mitigates the ill impact on the environment.
  • To reduce the waste disposal cost of the community: The cost of disposing of waste through a landfill includes waste collecting, transporting and storing in the landfill site. Moreover, it also includes clean-up costs for the contaminated groundwater costs, costs for maintaining the landfill site for the long term and monitoring the wells at the site for contaminant release. The process of recycling some of the waste can reduce transportation costs, storing costs, groundwater clean-up costs and the cost of long-term maintenance of landfill sites (Nanda and Berruti 2021).
