Supporting oral language development is one of the most critical roles for educators in both early childhood and primary settings. In order for teachers to provide effective support, it is important that they have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles of the teaching of oral language development, and the implications for classroom practice.   

This assignment will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge in these areas. It will also provide an opportunity for you to develop your written communication skills and ability to structure information in the form of an essay. Your essay should reference unit materials, curriculum documents, and other relevant sources.

In this essay, you are required to address the following:

In this essay, you will describe and discuss three guiding principles for the effective teaching and learning of children’s oral language development. Describe how each principle supports oral language acquisition and suggest and justify a learning activity that might be part of your literacy curriculum, reasoning how your guiding principles are reflected in the activity.

Your essay should include the following sections:

Section 1: Introduction

• Introduce the topic.
• Identify the key terms you that will address in the essay.

Section 2: Body of the essay

• The body of the essay will consist of a series of paragraphs addressing the following: 

Part A 

• Design a set of three principles (or big ideas) for the effective teaching and learning of oral language in the early years of schooling that will guide your approach to planning a literacy curriculum.  
• Indicate how each principle supports oral language acquisition. 

Part B

• Describe one activity that might be part of your literacy curriculum to support students’ learning and justify how the principles you identified in Part A of this task are reflected in this activity. 

Section 3: Conclusion 

• Summarise the information provided in the essay.
