Assignment Description
The objectives for this second essay are multi-tiered. First, you will be asked to draw a comparison with
one Indigenous group and one marginalized group of non-Indigenous backgrounds. Secondly, this essay
asks of you to centralize your focus on situations or event(s) for marginalized and Indigenous groups in
the context of identifying cause and effect relationships. The premise of this essay is to draw
comparisons between Indigenous groups and non-Indigenous groups throughout history. There will be
readings during this unit that will guide you in your position. Most times a causal argument seeks causes
for a certain phenomenon, condition that is currently in play, or occurred within history. Historical and
cultural contexts are to be considered as well. Research and well documented evidence is linked with
well-structured rhetoric in this essay.
The Causal Argument
The concept behind the causal argument is inherently simple. “This causes this because of these
reasons” is pretty much the goal for this assignment. Consider what caused the problem or issue; its
involvement within the communities; and what other results that have arrived due the problem at hand
(the causal chain). The most challenging aspect for the casual argument lies behind proving the
relationship between causes and effects actually exists. Remember that just because you understand
the relationship to exist, others most likely do not. This is where the idea of “bringing the invisible into
the visible” comes into play.
Context: The Mergence of 2 Worlds
This is assignment is unique in that it is multi-layered.
1)
face being marginalized;
2)
using cause and effect relationships as your vehicle to drive your argument.
The main difficulty of this essay is finding two groups that have a shared history of sorts. This is where
good research, deep argumentation, and critical thinking and analysis come into play. Bear in mind that
in addition to this there are the other objectives that need to be met and this may cause you to change
your groups you are focusing on several times. This is the writing process in which persuasion goes.
Thinking and re-thinking, constantly.
Appeal to Pathos (emotions)
Pathos originated in classical teachings of rhetoric dating back to 4 BCE in Ancient Greece. Written in
Rhetoric
any circumstance, you can use all or just some of the appeals to enhance your credibility in an
argument, or as elements of persuasion. Logos is the appeal to the readers’ “intellect”. Pathos is the
appeal to the readers’ “emotions”. Both of which help you gain ethos or your “credibility”. For this essay
we will focus a little more on incorporating the appeal to pathos (emotions) for our readers. The
requirement is to find a method or technique to include appeals to pathos throughout your essay.
Consider how can you move your readers emotionally and effectively? These are to be intentional
measures and in doing this we become cognizant writers. More details on what this can look like coming
soon.
My Advice
My advice would be to consider what you feel to be an important issue to write about. What issue
deserves attention? What issue has not had enough attention? What issue has not been given proper
attention? What is important to you regarding the history of Indigenous people? How are you linked to
the issue? You may also focus upon an issue your first essay covered should you feel the need to explore
it further from a persuasive lens.
