Work and Retirement Inequity Analysis Reflection Paper

Outcome: Social Responsibility and Ethics. As part of this essential learning outcome, the course will
require students to reason about:
• Their own right and wrong conduct
• Assess the moral beliefs and practices of themselves and others
• Apply that knowledge to make a positive difference in the community and the world
Much of what you have done throughout class lessons, reading and discussing work and retirement
inequity has addressed those items. This reflection paper assignment asks that you tie the themes from
multiple activities together.
In a minimum of five paragraphs, please describe how the work and retirement inequity activities
helped you to:
• Analyze experiences of work, starting a career, and retiring
• Place starting a career and retiring in historical context
• Recognize the influence of social position
• Recognize power differentials and how race and racism operate in policies
As part of this description, please incorporate examples from at least two activities from class. The class
sessions are recorded and on blackboard if you need to review them again. Also summarize any skills
that you used and developed. Some examples might be reading analytically, analyzing policies, and
recognizing the impacts of structural racism. Discuss any big picture changes in views you have on public
health careers, retirement, and structural racism.
Some tips for success in writing this paper are to describe common themes that you noticed across
activities. Did something show up more than once, or in more than one way? Explain any “ah-ha”
moments that you had. Do you understand something better or differently than you did before? Are you
able to think about things in a different way because of what you learned? Discuss skills that you will
utilize moving forward. Are you able to look at one issue from multiple angles now? Are you able to
envision how others might view an issue in a different way than you do? Can you envision how this
might help your career moving forward?
Be sure to use inclusive, non-stigmatizing, person-centered language. Be detailed, concise, and specific.
Avoid over-generalizing or making broad, blanket statements.
