  1. You will write a thesis-driven, literary essay that makes a claim and supports it primarily through textual evidence and secondarily through external critiques by literature scholars and/or primary, archival research. This 1500 – 2000-word essay (roughly 6-8 pages in MLA style)

    Topic :

I plan on basing my research paper on ‘Abortion’. Despite it being a short text, I believe there is much to be understood and researched about the concept of ethics at the time surrounding abortion. I plan on focusing on the media available to young women and men at the time and the targeted propaganda that aimed to discourage women to abort.

While researching for my teaching experience in class I came across a number of images that caught my attention. I also found certain patterns in wording in newspapers; one of them being the word ‘rebels’ to describe young women who would consider aborting.

I expect my secondary research to be relatively simple, using library resources to find archival material such as newspapers of the time along with other pieces of propaganda including pamphlets and brochures. Ideally, I’d also find interviews regarding the subject that can be used to further support the main point of the essay. I predict I’ll find that there is a direct link between religion and the neglection of the abortion ideology, especially in New England.

In terms of the play itself, you would want to connect the cultural forces with the actions of the play. For example, what can you surmise about the doctor that Jack supposedly found for Nellie, after you read about abortion in this time period? In terms of the play itself, you would want to connect the cultural forces with the actions of the play.
