Advocacy and Social Change Organisation Assignment
Can you condense your ideas into just one page?
Whether you`re in the organising or mobilising phase of a campaign, whether you`re doing some internal planning or meeting with a politician or other official, being able to condense your ideas and articulate them clearly is an essential skill.
One way we can develop this skill is by giving ourself the boundary of a single page to capture ideas. If it takes more than one page to hold your main ideas that you`re focussing on in that moment (not to be confused with all the other excellent ideas and research that you have that are also important) maybe you`re overcomplicating the situation and need to focus more.
Types of advocacy one-pager:
Internal:
Campaign plan overview Campaign logic model Key campaign messaging Script for door-knocking volunteers Objective
What is the specific outcome you are looking for? Is it solving an evidence-informed problem? Is your objective SMART? (Simple, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, Time-bound)?
Target
Who is the key decision-maker over the outcome? Who specifically has the power to give you what you want? I.e. a Minister, a Judge, a CEO, etc.
Strategy
What approach are you taking to creating change? Does this require a community-, elite- or partnership- focused campaign? At what stages might you be confrontational or cooperative? Insider or outside?
Message
What are the 3-4 key messages of the campaign? Do they tell the complete story of change that leaves space for the decision-maker to act in your favour? Who are the key messengers?
Resources
What human, organisational and financial resources do you have? What materials or relationships might you need to create?
Tactics
What activities and tactics will you employ, over what time period? Are they selected strategically to exert influence over your decision-maker?
Reflection
How will you know whether your tactics are achieving your goals? How might some of the tactics be measurable? When are you going to officially ‘review’ your strategy?

Possible formats for the one-page campaign resource include:
Advocacy Campaign One-pagers
Can you condense your ideas into a single page? This skill is crucial for effectively communicating during both the organising and mobilising phases of a campaign, whether for internal planning or external advocacy.
Creating a one-page document forces clarity and focus, which can help streamline your efforts and ensure that your primary ideas are not lost in complexity.
Examples of advocacy one-pagers include:
Internal:
Objective: Define the specific, evidence-based outcome you seek. Ensure it is SMART (Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, Time-bound).
Target: Identify the key decision-maker(s) who can deliver your desired outcome, such as a Minister, Judge, or CEO.
Strategy: Outline your approach for creating change. Determine if your campaign will focus on community, elite, or partnership strategies and decide when to be confrontational or cooperative, insider or outsider.
Message: Develop 3-4 key messages that tell the complete story of change and encourage decision-makers to act in your favour. Identify key messengers.
Resources: List the human, organisational, and financial resources available, as well as any additional materials or relationships needed.
Tactics: Plan specific activities and tactics over your campaign`s timeline, chosen to effectively influence your decision-maker.
Reflection: Determine how you will measure the success of your tactics and plan for periodic strategy reviews to ensure your goals are being met.
