Your task is to create your own case study of a student with a disability. You should use your imagination and wider literature to describe the student and provide evidence-based differentiated strategies.

Imagine you are a teacher in an early childhood centre, primary school, or secondary school, and you have a student with a disability or diverse needs in your class.

Critically analyse the literature and discuss evidence-based differentiated strategies that are inclusive of all students and could be used to respond to the needs of this student.

  • For this assessment, you should focus on your chosen setting: early childhood centre, primary or secondary school.
  • Please keep in mind that your evidence should come from recent articles published in peerreviewed journals.
  • It should be clear that the references have been read in-depth and the ideas are well integrated. To do this, you need to show that you understand the details of the studies you are citing and not just pick out some key findings.
  • You need to show how evidence from each study contributes to the broader understanding of the topic.
  • You can write your case study as a “first or third-person perspective” analysis.
  • You should include international and Australian research.
  • Please do not use general websites or similar sources of information as evidence.

A profile of the student 

You should include a general description of your case study student (fictitious name, age, gender, disability, etc.), possible strengths and interests in school and beyond, and specific challenges that arise due to the student`s disability within the school setting. This should include obstacles in learning, social integration, and participation in school activities. Ensure that your analysis is grounded in current educational research, providing evidence to support your identification and understanding of these challenges.

Inclusive teaching strategies 

You should develop teaching strategies for your case study student that are inclusive of all students in the class.

Develop a set of differentiated teaching strategies that cater to the specific needs of your case study student while also being inclusive of all students in the class. Support these strategies with relevant research and critically analyse why/how they would help this student and contribute to an inclusive classroom.

Collaborative strategies and practices

In this section, you should describe how you would communicate and collaborate with school support staff (SLSOs, school counsellors, speech therapists, occupational therapists, etc) and the student’s parents to ensure the inclusion of your case study student. Discuss how you would collaborate/work together with support staff and parents to create an inclusive and effective educational experience for your case study student and support your strategies with relevant research.
