Context

Case studies depict real-life scenarios or problems that help individuals consider multiple perspectives on a topic. They also bridge theory with practice by illustrating theory in action within real-world scenarios.

This assessment tasks you with working both individually and collaboratively to (a) analyze a case study in relation to the theories covered in this unit, (b) develop an ‘improved’ case study, and (c) reflect on your learning through this task and in this unit of study.

Scenario

In a foundational classroom setting, the teacher organizes time during the day for children to work at shared tables of six to complete their lessons, and at other times, they engage in play-based learning activities on the floor or at smaller tables. These activities include construction sets, card games, drawing, and numeracy and literacy materials. The teacher uses this time to provide additional support to some children who require extra assistance with the lesson.

Grace, Chi, and Prianka, three friends who are effective learners, sometimes avoid interacting with other children, especially during play activities. Priyanka’s mother has informed the teacher that she is being bullied by some of the other children during these times. The teacher is taken aback by this revelation and is considering strategies to improve the situation.

  1. Analysis of the Scenario

Compose an introduction followed by collaborative reflections on the key issues in the scenario discussed and analyzed within the team:

  • What concerns are presented in the scenario?
  • Consider the perspectives of the children, teachers, and families.
  • What factors contribute to the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of this teaching and learning environment?
  1. Consideration of Theoretical Perspectives

The aim of this part of the assessment is to develop and demonstrate your understanding of theories of teaching and learning. Each team member will select a different theory from the seven outlined in this unit. Describe how your chosen theory allows you to view the scenario, providing examples and descriptions of children`s learning under this theory if employed by the teacher. Define and describe specific teaching strategies, classroom design considerations, and the teacher’s role based on your chosen theory.

For your selected theory:

  • Provide a brief summary.
  • Examine the theory`s benefits and limitations in explaining the scenario.
  • Apply the theory to the scenario with examples of how children would learn if this theory guided the teacher’s practice.
  1. Review and Comparison

Decide as a team which of the shared theories offers the most effective solution to the scenario. Justify your choice with supporting examples. There is no definitive correct theory; rather, you are being evaluated on your ability to grasp theoretical perspectives and explain why a specific theory is the best choice for your team, supported by research and examples.

Decide which of the seven theories encountered in this unit offers the best framework to understand and address the scenario. Explain your rationale for choosing this theory.
