Assignment:

Instructions

Using the fallacies covered in chapter and the Book of Bad Arguments, you are to find real world examples. You have the entire semester to complete this assignment. I suggest getting started now and keeping a list of fallacies whenever you find one. Fallacies can be found while watching a movie, you favorite TV show, or even on social media.

  • Give an example of any 10 fallacies. You can only use each fallacy one time. For instance, only 1 ad hominem example counts. You can, however, use the same type of example. For instance, if you find different fallacies in multiple episodes of Parks and Rec or several different tweets that works.
  • The examples can be taken from anything in the real world. This means in the newspapers, on T.V., the movies, periodicals, commercials, billboards, etc. The examples need to be documented (to avoid a person just making up the example). When you submit the assignment you need to include documentation of the example. You can take a screenshot of the tweet, a picture of the magazine ad, copy and paste a youtube link, or list the name of the movie the example came from.
  • I do not want you to just google fallacy examples. Here is a list of examples that are off limits. If you use any of these examples you will not receive credit.
  • Each example must have a complete rationale explaining the example, identifying which type of fallacy, and why it is a fallacy
  • This page has several examples so you can see what I am looking for with this assignment.

I want you to find examples for yourself. These examples are off limits because either I use them as examples already or they are results that you get from doing a google search for examples.
