To help reorganize the Southern states following the Civil War and allow them back into the Union, Congress enacted Reconstruction in 1866–1877. It defined how whites and blacks may live together peacefully in a non-slave society. The South needed to be rebuilt after the Civil War.
Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Abraham Lincoln as president following his assassination, had substantially different views on the issue than the Radical Republicans in Congress. Even though the Southern states had broken away from the Union and waged war against it, President Johnson believed that they had not forfeited their right to self-government 1. As long as they abided by the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, paid off their war bills, and vowed their allegiance to the United States, they would be able to preserve this prerogative. In May 1865, President Johnson`s Presidential Reconstruction stated that land that the Union Army had seized during the war and given to freed former slaves would be returned to its original owners. Following Lincoln`s example, Johnson was, in a sense, mimicking him.
Reconstruction was a success, the 14th and 15th Amendments` authority Amendments paved the way for complete civil rights for African Americans in the twentieth century. Despite Reconstruction`s loss of ground, African Americans were able to establish a measure of autonomy in Southern society 1.
2.What were the goals of the "Progressive Movement?" Who were the "Progressives" and what was their fundamnental world view? Give three examples of specific issues targeted for improvement by "Progressives" and the specific solutions that were proposed?
Social welfare protection, economic reformation, moral improvement, and industrial efficiency were the primary goals of the progressive movement. By the end of the 19th century, progressives believed the nation was in crisis and that it could not be resolved. They aimed for a more democratic society, more honest and competent administration, better business regulation, and more social justice for the working class 2. The arguments raised by the movement included the sixteenth amendment`s introduction of an income tax, the seventeenth amendment`s introduction of a direct election for senators, and the eighteenth amendment`s introduction of Prohibition.
3. What was the long term domestic impact to the United States of entering World War I? Give three examples of how the war changed or impacted American society? If you were living in 1917, would you have favored or opposed American entry into the war?
There were negative consequences for the United States as a result of World War I. More than 1.5 million of the war`s participants perished. A lot of money was spent on the battle as well. The greatest consequence of World War I was the outbreak of World War II. Because the Germans were utilizing unrestrained warfare and planning against the United States with the Zimmermann note, and because the Americans understood they were powerful and capable of getting things done, they entered the war 3. They returned from the battle to find that there was no equality among the people, therefore they demanded civil rights. Additional developments were conscription, public relations campaigns, and the FBI`s rise to prominence during World War II. I`d vote to enter the war since it was a way to ensure that all citizens were treated equally.
