What is a Reflective Essay?
Reflection exercises offer the student the opportunity to consider their thoughts, opinions, and experiences in relation to specific content covered in the module. Furthermore, it allows the student to engage with how their own opinions and experiences influence their acceptance, understanding and views of new theories, ideas, concepts, or information. Writing that focuses on reflection allow the student to not only express their own opinions but also works to improve their analytical skills, as well as, their comprehension of key concepts and/or ideas related to the topic for reflection.
The student`s ability to:
Examine their thoughts about the content, and what it means for them, offering a unique and independent yet related view, and understanding of the content, will be assessed. Furthermore, the student`s ability to write and reflect critically will be
assessed.
Instructions:
Think about an addictive behaviour that you find difficult to contain or manage, e.g. excessive consumption of energy drinks, smoking, excessive chocolate consumption, street racing. social media monitoring, binge-watching series, etc.
This behaviour/habit should be one that you would like to change, modify or adapt.
Activity Instructions:
Over four weeks attempt to change this behaviour, implement the strategies you see fit to modify or change this behaviour.
Journal your personal change experience of this addictive behaviour during this period.
Assessment Instructions:
After these four weeks, write a critical reflective summary of your progress by discussing the following:

Provide a brief description of the addictive behaviour and why you have identified this as problematic;
How often do you resort to this addictive behaviour, and discuss how it aligns with the learned description of addictive behaviours;
Assessment
All assessments should be typed (preferably double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman or 11-point Calibri), carefully proofread, and should give evidence of considerable thought/reference to relevant and, where possible, contextual psychological journals and literature. Your assessments must show the development of your position in a coherent, logical, and organized way, and must demonstrate thorough engagement with the various topics covered in this module. Papers will be graded according to the following criteria: grammar and writing style, clarity and organisation, effort, originality, critical engagement, theoretical and practical relevance, and integration of knowledge.
Apply a theoretical model which helps you to make sense of the addictive behaviour;
How does your context reinforce or abate the addictive behaviour?;
Discuss your intervention or treatment approach or strategy in modifying or changing the addictive behaviour;
Identify potential challenges you might experience in the intervention, treatment or modification of this behaviour;
What support structures do you have in place, further explain the significance of these support structures?
