After reading Lois Horton’s Harriet Tubman and the Fight for Freedom as well as America Women: A Concise History, pages 48-56 & 60-63, write an essay, which addresses the following question:
In what ways did Tubman violate traditional gender expectations in regard to women? (Horton 164) In other words, in what ways did Tubman challenge traditional 19th century gender norms?
Use Horton’s introduction and American Women sparingly; let primary sources provide the basis of your examination. The 4-6 page, typed, double spaced essay (1000-1500 word count) should incorporate at least eight different primary documents. The primary document examples should come from Harriet Tubman and the Fight for Freedom, pages 103-160.
