James Campbell Case Study
Background
James Campbell is a 67 year old man (DOB: 4/09/1953) from Perth, WA. James was previously married to his wife Amelia for 30 years; however, they divorced six months ago. James and Amelia have one daughter, Alice (25 years), who lives with her mother but visits James regularly.
Twelve months ago, James was diagnosed with prostate cancer and is currently undergoing intense treatment. Jamesâs condition has deteriorated over the last eight months since commencing treatment. Jamesâs diagnosis has been, understandably, very challenging for the Campbell family; however, they are working together to come to terms with Jamesâs treatment requirements and condition. James has recently been diagnosed with depression following his diagnosis and divorce.
James does not have any family besides Amelia and Alice in Perth. Jamesâs mother and father passed away last year. Jamesâs father died from lung cancer, and his mother died from a heart attack three months later. James has a strong family history of obesity, depression, and anxiety disorders.
Jamesâs medical treatment and deteriorating health have meant that he is unable to continue working. He is now receiving a pension from Centrelink; however, this is a substantial decrease in income. James struggles to exercise or get to the shops and often eats a poor diet consisting of high fat and sugar takeaway, as it is cheaper and more convenient.
Jamesâs relationship with his wife is amicable, and she calls him weekly to check on him. Jamesâs wife does not visit as James feels embarrassed about his weight gain and the messy state of his new house. Jamesâs daughter Alice visits every second day and tries to run errands for James when she has time. Alice has just started a new job as a Graduate Registered Nurse and on some days is unable to help James due to her shift work. Jamesâs best friend, Rob, visits every Saturday for âa couple of beers in the backyardâ.
James was previously independent with showering and dressing, but over the last few weeks, he has been experiencing difficulty with personal care. Jamesâs weight gain, dizziness from his treatment and occasional pain has limited his movement and self-care.
James has his driverâs license and owns a car, but he is finding it challenging to drive due to the side effects of his medication. James doesnât use public transport, as the closest bus stop is 500m from home, and he cannot walk the distance. James is receiving some support from the hospital he attends to receive treatment. The Social Worker has arranged transport for James to and from his treatment appointment on days when Alice is unavailable. James does not currently have any support for personal care, which James has been meaning to discuss at his next hospital appointment.
