Case Study

Maia, a 28-year-old mother of a 1-year-old son, resides with her supportive family. She has a history of substance use involving heroin, ice, meth, and prescription drugs. Maia made a significant lifestyle change upon discovering her pregnancy at 12 weeks, shifting away from heavy ice use. She is now on methadone and receives mental health and child protection support. Living with her mother and stepfather, Maia is also assisted by her son`s family. She has limited contact with the father due to his ongoing substance use, which led to child protection involvement during her pregnancy. Maia is motivated to work on her goals and relies primarily on family support, receiving a single parent payment from Centrelink with no other income. While she has held sporadic casual retail roles, she is currently unemployed.
